Here are a few questions you should ask yourself to help our qualified professionals determine the best style for you:

  • What is the overall style of your home: Contemporary? Modern? Neoclassical? Victorian?

What are the common causes of damage to hardwood flooring?

Water and moisture are the most common sources of damage to hardwood flooring. This can cause the following issues:

  • Buckling: wood flooring lifts up off of the subfloor (this is an uncommon and extreme reaction to moisture)
  • Cupping: the edges of a board lift up, while the center sinks.
  • Crowning: the opposite of cupping. The center of a board lifts up while the edges sink.
  • Gaps between floor boards (commonly caused by moisture).
  • Stains and molding

Can pets damage hardwood flooring?

Pets and hardwood flooring can coexist peacefully, but may require more frequent maintenance. Some of the common issues and ways to prevent or treat them include:

  • Liquid from urine, vomit, food, and water bowls can cause water damage. Place training pads and waterproof pads beneath water, food bowls, and litter boxes to absorb messes. To clean up liquid messes, apply a paste of baking soda and white vinegar.
  • Long, sharp nails can scratch and dent wood. To prevent this, cut your animals nails frequently and place rugs in high traffic areas.
  • Rule of thumb when choosing a hardwood style: Use hard species of wood as these will be tougher to damage, avoid glossy floors as they show damages more clearly, remember that tough finishes and sanding can remove imperfections.

How long does hardwood flooring last?

There are many different factors that determine how long hardwood flooring can last; from the damage they receive, the amount of traffic in the home, to the climate. The better you care for your floors, the longer they will last. When cared for properly, hardwood floors can last over 25 years. Typically, hardwood floors should be refinished every 8-12 years.
